The 2011 Best Colleges Rankings are Now Available Online at U.S. News University Directory

U.S. News & World Report, the recognized authority on college and university rankings, has launched the 2011 edition of its annual Best Colleges issue

TAMPA, Fla., August 17, 2010 - U.S. News & World Report has released the 2011 edition of its annual Best Colleges issue. This report provides the nation’s most trusted rankings of colleges and universities that award undergraduate degrees. It is specifically designed to be straightforward, easy to use and provide the information students need to make informed decisions about their education.

Since it was first published in 1983, the Best Colleges issue has been the indispensible college rankings resource. In addition to its highly sought-after listing of regional colleges and universities, Best Colleges 2011 includes information about particular programs such as business, engineering and more.

The 2011 rankings are also available online at U.S. News University Directory, which provides a variety of other education resources as well. Search an extensive listing of on-campus and online programs; contact over 1,900 of America’s best colleges and universities; get the latest news from U.S. News reporters; and download a free financial aid guide that includes expert tips and critical FAFSA documents!

The 2011 edition of Best Colleges also provides: general information on applying for and attending college; the latest news from a variety of popular fields and degree programs; insight into how schools achieve their rank; and a complete index of schools so that the entry for each can be found quickly and easily.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual income of workers who hold a bachelor’s degree is now almost $20,000 more than those who hold only a high school diploma. Over a 40-year working life, that’s a difference of more than $700,000 – quite a significant pay increase! And the salary of graduates who hold a degree in an in-demand field like nursing or software engineering may rise even higher.

In addition, the benefits of a bachelor’s degree go beyond increased wages. College graduates typically have access to better benefits, more vacation time, greater career mobility, and the sense of personal achievement that comes from challenging themselves to excel.

For students who are ready to pursue a college degree, Best Colleges 2011 is the go-to resource. It is the only publication with rankings from the trusted authority on colleges and graduate schools – U.S. News & World Report.

Graduates of The University of Scranton’s Online Master of Science in Education Program Praise the Benefits of E-Learning at Spring Commencement Ceremony

2010 Graduating Class Includes 357 Students Who Earned Their MS in Curriculum and Instruction or MS in Educational Administration Degree Online

TAMPA, Fla., August 9, 2010 – Hundreds of graduate students walked in The University of Scranton’s Spring 2010 commencement procession, including many master of science in education recipients who completed their degree programs 100% online. The May 29 ceremony marked the first time most of these online students ever set foot on the campus of the acclaimed institution, which is ranked among the top 10 Master’s Universities in the North by U.S. News & World Report.

This unique group of graduates praised both the ceremony and their online education experience. “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to walk and receive my diploma in front of family and friends,” stated Carly Beth Batzel, who chose The University of Scranton’s online Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction program because of the school’s reputation for academic excellence, coupled with its online convenience. “As a working mom and a military wife, I needed the flexibility of working and studying when my schedule allowed – even if that was at midnight or 5:00 a.m.! The University of Scranton allowed me to pursue my advanced degree and fulfill my current responsibilities at the same time.” Batzel felt the commencement ceremony “was the perfect culmination of two years of self-discipline, hard work and time management.”

“I am so glad that I participated in graduation. I loved the atmosphere and being part of such a special occasion,” said Roy Wright, who earned his Master of Science in Educational Administration. He selected The University of Scranton based on the school’s “tremendous reputation” and the recommendations of two friends who are alumni, as well as the online program’s flexibility to fit within his demanding schedule. Wright plans to apply his new credentials in pursuit of his career goals: “I intend to become a principal and then a superintendent within five to 10 years!”

For Thomas L. Martin, a father of four with a busy work schedule, the university’s online program was his only choice for earning an MS in Educational Administration. He appreciated the flexible, video-based e-learning platform, since “attending traditional classes was nearly impossible.” The online courses perfectly suited Martin’s needs, and his advanced degree will empower him to move into an administrator role.

Several MS in Curriculum and Instruction recipients remarked that they were grateful for the opportunity to participate in the graduation ceremony and very pleased with the university’s online program. “It was very important for me to attend commencement,” said Linda Stokes, noting that the university made its online students feel “just as important as students who took courses on campus.” She proclaimed the program to be “excellent for teachers” and believes it will help her attain a higher-paying job.

Her online classmate, Michelle Efseaff, found the entire experience to be very satisfying: “All the work, all the learning, all the time spent on the computer came back full-force as I was walking to receive my diploma.” Efseaff, who chose The University of Scranton based on its top ranking from U.S. News & World Report, felt the online program met her high expectations and fulfilled her academic needs. An adjunct faculty member at Porterville College, she hopes to leverage her advanced degree to become a staff member in her employer’s new teacher credential program.

Fellow graduate Nancy Nolan had equally high praise for the university’s online MS in Curriculum and Instruction program. “I was pleased that I could accumulate several credits in a short period of time,” explained Nolan. “More importantly, I appreciated The University of Scranton’s reputation and high standards, and knew I would be in a meaningful program.”

Dominican University Awards More Than $156,000 for Its First-Ever Teacher Scholarships

New Program Will Give Selected Teachers the Opportunity to Earn an Education Master’s 100% Online at Significantly Reduced Tuition

TAMPA, Fla., July 7, 2010 – Dominican University is now accepting applications for the new Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarships, which will award 30 first-time applicants to its online Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) degree programs with more than $5,200 apiece to complete their education. Provided by Bisk Education as part of its commitment to developing outstanding educators, these scholarships offer a 33% savings on tuition for recipients, who will enjoy the reduced rate for as long as they remain active in one of Dominican’s online master’s in education programs.

In order to be awarded one of these teacher scholarships, applicants must meet several criteria, including:
  • Teaching in a classroom or working in school administration at the time of application
  • Demonstrating that they have had a positive impact on the lives of others
  • Holding a bachelor’s degree and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA from a regionally accredited institution, or being a graduate of a regionally accredited master’s, specialist or doctoral program in which they earned a minimum 3.0 GPA
The program will initially span the six sessions from Fall I 2010 through Summer II 2011, with five new recipients being named each session. The scholarship application deadline for the first session is August 16, 2010, the last date to apply for admission to a Dominican online MAEd program for the Fall I session.

“Dominican University is proud to honor accomplished educators with the opportunity to pursue higher academic and professional goals through these education scholarships,” said Sister Colleen McNicholas, Dean Emerita of the School of Education. “We look forward to helping foster their further success.”

U.S. News & World Report-ranked Dominican has long been known for providing a quality education to its students. Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarships – valued at $435.60 per individual course – will enable dozens of gifted teachers to experience proven Dominican curricula through the convenience of a 100% online virtual classroom. Unlike most campus-based programs, these online master’s in education programs allow students to set their own schedule, with 24/7 access to video-based lectures. No campus visits are required, but students are invited to walk in their graduation ceremony at the completion of their degree.

Designed to empower working teachers with the specialized skills to excel in today’s classroom, Dominican’s MAEd degrees are offered online in three concentrations: reading, elementary education and English as a second language. Bisk Foundation Teacher Education Scholarships will aid educators in acquiring the skills and credentials they need to enjoy more rewarding careers. According to the U.S. Department of Education, a master’s degree can add $7,500 to a teacher’s annual salary.
